Organizing and Decluttering My Sewing Room

I'm a neat freak. That's no secret and it's something I'm ok with since I do believe a tidy house is a happy house.  I realize this will change drastically when we have children one day. However for now I find myself constantly tidying. When we first got married this drove Jonathan crazy but over time I think I've found a healthy compromise of allowing my husband his spots of clutter, untouched...well for a period of time. Thus I remain a happy home cleaner.

That being said there's one room in my home that I've found incredibly frustrating, my sewing room. The trouble has been finding proper storage space for all my fabric, patterns, garments and basically everything.

A few weeks back I even revealed My Terrible Hidden Secret of fabric spilling out of an inadequate wooden wardrobe that was left in the house when Jonathan and I moved in. Some lovely folks even gave some creative suggestions for fabric storage. However I felt like I was dealing with more fabric than what a simple filing cabinet or shoe organizer could hold.

Finally Friday evening I bit the bullet and purchased 6 large plastic bins and set about to organize and declutter this room. It took the whole weekend with on and off working in the room but by Sunday afternoon the room was glorious! So without further adieu I'll reveal my before and after photos.

Before
How sad it was, my fabric would no longer sit nicely in the dresser and would push open the doors spilling onto the floor. It was awful. That being said it wasn't typically this bad, I'd shove the fabric in the dresser as best as I could. This was just a really bad day.
The Cleanup
After
Can you hear that? Ssshh, listen. That's the sound of quietness, no chaos, no mess, and everything has its place. It's definitely no Pinterest pretty room but it's clean, it's organized and walking into the room creates peace and that's whats most important to me.
Finally I can sew in this room without stepping over mounds of fabric. I'm one happy gal.

My sewing room looks like your before photo. It's not just fabric, all the things I don't have a place for end up there and it's chaos. I'm hoping to organise it this month.

Haha you can do it too Natasha. It's a little exhausting the process but so worth it in the end! You've got this!

I don't have a sewing room, but the before picture looks strangely like my wardrobe room... hopefully I will finally buy a chest of drawers and get organized soon. Well done to you, it must be an inspiring place to work now!

LOL i just gave my craft room an overhaul because, well, it was looking much like yours. I was trying to decide if I was going to post in on the blog. My first thought was that it was too embarrassing but your post gives me courage! If I post the pics I'll be sure to send the link your way ;)

Then I wondered about Method Monday or Strategy Saturday, which sounded equally dull. So I came up with Friday Feat, then changed it to Feet, in reference to presser feet, but it also reminds me of shoes, and everyone loves shoes. my website
