Julia hails all the way from Tel Aviv, Israel and creates such beautiful clothing you'd think she'd come from Milan or New York. Her vintage girly style is something I adore so I was thrilled to be able to have her as a guest blogger for this week.
I hope you enjoy reading her story and advice as much as I did. Make sure to also check out her Etsy shop and her Facebook page. Send her a hello, we all love those.
My name is Julia Gasin, I'm a 27 year old fashion designer based in Tel Aviv , Israel. I was born in Russia and moved to Israel with my family at the age of 6. I first started sewing when I was 16 years old and decided to make the clothes I wanted to wear instead of feeling frustrated that I couldn't find anything interesting in the shops.( confession: Back then I looked and dressed like Morticia Addams .. )
At the age of 20 towards the end of my military service I realized that fashion is the only career path for me and decided to enroll and get a degree in Fashion Design. My destination was Milano, Italy. For the next year and a half I worked 3 jobs and sold my designs via Ebay under the label Bad.apple.stitches to save up as much money as I could. At the age of 22 I started my Fashion & Textile design degree at IED (istituto europeo di design) in Milano. I graduated in 2009 and came back here to Tel Aviv. A couple of months later, my independent label named "JUL" was created.
2) Are you full time with your Etsy shop? If so what point in your life where you able to commit this as your day job?
I'm very fortunate to be able to work full time on my label! As well as on ETSY, I sell to local boutiques here in Israel and directly to costumers from my studio and facebook page.I opened my ETSY shop in 2009 but must admit it took me a while to get into the groove of things and use Etsy as a full time job... so, you could say that only in the past year or so I'm fully present and dedicating myself to my shop.
3) When you started your Etsy shop what were some challenges you faced?
Hmmm well taking good photographs! I still do… you can't imagine how many fights I get into with my photographer (husband).
Me: "your stupid camera gave me a double chin – we have to reshoot
4) Right now what are your most popular items?Pin up Style dresses and Ruffle scarves
